"Junior Achievement Triumphs" This headline ran in the Vancouver Sun on May 16, 1956 celebrating the success of the eight-month-old Junior Achievement of British Columbia. At this time, Junior Achievement included over 300 Vancouver high school students who had eagerly signed up to be part of the business club.

In the early days, Junior Achievement was set up as an after school club for high school students.  It was touted by some as the "urban 4-H" as its purpose was to give city youth the opportunity to learn about business.  Advisors volunteered to coach small groups of students through the process of starting and running their own companies.

Sherry Baker, President of 55pluspros.ca, a  web based employment service for people over 50, and Influence Media, a company that imports technologies for the advertising industry, remembers being part of the first group of JA students from 1955 to 1957.  Always looking to get involved with new things, Sherry quickly put her name on the list when the local JA representative came around to her school to recruit students.

"I remember our meetings were held in an old warehouse in Gastown," commented Baker, "Our group would meet once a week with our volunteer Advisors.  We were responsible for everything our company did from production to sales and promotions."  Sherry even remembers working on the team that managed the JA Bank.  "We learned how banks functioned and how to manage money responsibly."

A successful entrepreneur, Baker credits her Junior Achievement experience with nurturing her thirst for knowledge. "You need to remember, at this time, young women were given very few career options." says Baker, "Junior Achievement gave women the confidence to pursue jobs other than nursing or teaching.  Both men and women were given the opportunity to become the President of their JA company."

One of Sherry's fondest memories of JA was speaking at the Vancouver Board of Trade.  "I remember practicing my pronunciation because I knew these were business professionals and I wanted to make a good impression".  Sherry also traveled to a number of JA Conferences in the United States, the most memorable being a conference at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles, California.

Junior Achievement's success was due to the incredible support it received from the community.  Every student company was sponsored by an existing business that was responsible for providing mentorship and guidance to the students as they began their projects.  Sherry says the valuable lessons and business skills she learned from her advisors have stayed with her throughout her career.

Bringing Junior Achievement to British Columbia was no easy feat.  Before 1955, the concept of an after school business club had never been implemented anywhere outside the United States.  Today, Junior Achievement is active in over 100 countries around the world.  One of the first articles about JA in BC asked, "Who says you can't start a company on $100?"  Thanks to the foresight of some shrewd Vancouver business people, youth from across BC are still asking the same question over 50 years later.
