In economic turbulence lies opportunity - the opportunity to share financial know-how and discipline with a new generation of Canadians.

Everywhere we look, we are bombarded by overwhelming messages and signs of an economy in crisis and turmoil. Everywhere we turn, the challenges we hear about are the very issues to which JA dedicates itself:  youth development, workforce readiness, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and economic growth. It is times like these where JA is needed THE MOST. It is at this time where the power of our entire business community can truly make a difference in the lives of all youth. This is a time to teach resilience.

As adults in the business world, we are living this situation first hand. But we can't forget that young people are also impacted. Whether its messages in the media, or a parent losing a job - children have questions. If we don't answer these questions or, more importantly, if we don't turn this challenge into a learning opportunity, the lesson for the next generation will be lost. Now is the time to talk to our kids about the economy, basic financial literacy, and the critical importance of staying in school.

I have included two documents JA Worldwide prepared to help us explain the basics of the stock market and recent economic crisis to our youth.  Take bits and pieces...add to it or water it down.  However you use it, I feel it is a catalyst for great discussion between you and your family or your students.

We hope that you are as encouraged about our future as we are. Our boundless belief in the potential of young people and the power of entrepreneurial spirit have convinced us the best is yet to come for Junior Achievement, for our young people, and for our country. Every day we prove what can be done when business works side by side in schools with our volunteers and educators for the greater good of our nation.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, our staff, and the 28,000 plus students, thank you for your commitment to Junior Achievement and the youth of today. Your continued support, mentorship, and life lessons can and will change lives.

Sincerely,

Students from Across BC Participate in Business Challenge

JABC President, Jan Bell-Irving, presents team Vikings from Burnaby North Secondary with their first place award

In January, over 140 high school business students from across the province competed at Junior Achievement of British Columbia's (JABC) annual BC Business Challenge in Richmond.  The event was a huge success with teams from Burnaby, Courtenay, and Surrey taking home top honours.

The BC Business Challenge is a fast-paced competition where grade 11 and 12 students take on the role of high-tech executives in a global business simulation. The intense day of competition has teams working against the clock to develop management strategies for their imaginary companies, analyzing financial reports, and scrutinizing the actions of other companies in a futuristic marketplace.

Twenty-four teams worked through 18 quarters of business to bring their futuristic product, a miniature audio player capable of generating holographic images, to market.  They determined pricing, production levels, dollars to be spent in marketing, capital investment, and research and development.

I'm a JA Volunteer...

I am also a JA donor.  Like you, I have been in the classroom and have seen first hand the amazing impact JA programs have on our youth.  I hope you will also consider making a donation so that as many students as possible can participate in these important business education programs.

Just $40 enables one student to participate.  Please go on-line and make a one time gift or join the Monthly Giving Program.
