Dear friends,

With summer upon us, JABC is busy preparing for another exciting year of inspiring young people throughout BC. I would like to take this time to thank you for your generous support this past school year.  With your help JA delivered business education programs to almost 30,000 students in communities across the province.

I encourage all of you to stay involved so we can continue to inspire more youth each year.  In fact, why not get a head start by registering your class for next Fall or committing to volunteer for two or more programs?  Please contact your local program manager for more details.

On behalf of all of us at JABC, I wish you a safe and relaxing summer and look forward to seeing you in September!

Sincerely,

Ron Tarves, from CIBC (far right) presents the Student Venture of the Year
Award to students and advisors from "Phresh"

Junior Achievement of British Columbia (JABC) is pleased to announce 'Phresh' has won the coveted 2010 CIBC Student Venture of the Year Award.  This after-school program was staffed by high school students from Burnaby, Vancouver and New Westminster.

Hosted by Accenture in Burnaby, the group experienced many challenges in organizing their departments, establishing standards for approving designs and setting up a printing process they could do themselves.  After many set-backs they persevered in bringing their customer-designed t-shirts to market, and soldiered on to a successful wrap-up for their company. Their clear and simple approach to reporting also resulted in the company receiving the award for Outstanding Financial Reporting.

Brooklyn Bauer, a student from Brocklehurst Secondary in Kamloops, was awarded the new Dr. Donald Rix Inspiring Business Excellence Scholarship.  Brooklyn travelled to the Vancouver, along with her teacher and fellow award winner Chynna Tobias, to accept the award personally from Laurie Rix-Macrae, daughter of the late business leader.

Altogether, over 50 students were honoured at the reception for their outstanding performance, creativity, and demonstration of business acumen.

Each year, Junior Achievement offers a number of awards & scholarships designed to recognize the achievements students have made throughout the school year.  All BC students participating in JA's Company Program-Student Venture, JA Titan, or Business Game programs are eligible to apply.

2010 Business Laureates Inducteed

Almost 700 business leaders, aspirants and their guests from across BC gathered at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver on May 19 for the induction of the province's newest Business Laureates into the Hall of Fame.  Junior Achievement of British Columbia (JABC) was the host for the 5th Annual Business Laureates of British Columbia Gala Dinner and Induction Ceremonies, co-sponsored by Scotiabank Group and Fasken Martineau.

Created by JABC in 2006, the Hall of Fame has a simple goal: to honour those who helped build our province...and to inspire the enterprising youth of BC to be builders themselves.

The new 2010 Laureates inductees were:

Alex A. Campbell, O.B.C., LL.D.;

Jack Diamond, C.C., O.B.C., LL.D. (1909 - 2001);

Robert (Bob) H. Lee, C.M., O.B.C., B.Comm., LL.D., Chairman, Prospero Group;

John (Jack) W. Poole, O.C., O.B.C., B.Sc. (1933 - 2009), Chairman, Board of Directors, VANOC

It was an evening in which BC's top business leaders met to socialize, recognize...and be inspired.  The Hon. Gordon Campbell, Premier of British Columbia, spoke via video while on a trade mission to Asia to pay tribute to the laureates and their families. Darren Entwistle, President & CEO, TELUS Corp. also spoke of the Laureates impact on our province and made an impromptu $10,000 pledge to JABC.

Images of the Hall of Fame site, now permanently located in the Vancouver Convention Centre East, flashed on-screen as Conrad Pinette, Co-Chair of the event, thanked the community for helping to build this new landmark.

Volunteer Spotlight

Santhy teaches a grade 5 student about mass production
during a Business Basics class

These days Santhy Yeager usually refers to herself as a volunteer, and rightfully so. Each year Santhy, a retired banker, generously gives her time to teach JA programs in the Okanagan Region...and this year was no exception.  From September to June Santhy delivered a remarkable 29 programs to the young people of Kelowna!  In all, she has taught over 65 programs since she first registered as a volunteer in 2007.  Her enthusiasm and passion for JA is infectious.  Because of this commitment students and teachers regularly request her participation in JA classrooms.

Her involvement often doesn't end with teaching the programs. Santhy creates DVD's of her students in action each year and uses them to help recruit other volunteers and donors.

Santhy has volunteered for Business Basics, Economics for Success, and Dollars with Sense.  This year Santhy taught her first Company Program to grade 12 students at Rutland Senior School and we know it won't be her last.

Congratulations Santhy on this exceptional milestone!
I'm a JA Volunteer...

I am also a JA donor.  Like you, I have been in the classroom and have seen first hand the amazing impact JA programs have on our youth.  I hope you will also consider making a donation so that as many students as possible can participate in these important business education programs.

Just $40 enables one student to participate.  Please go on-line and make a one time gift or join the Monthly Giving Program.
